The Kentucky Historical Society Foundation, Inc. is a single-purpose foundation, established to accept support solely for the benefit of the Kentucky Historical Society, a state agency and membership corporation located in Frankfort, Kentucky. The Society provides connections to the past, perspective on the present, and inspiration for the future.

Since its founding in 1991, the Foundation has raised more than $13.5 million in support of the Society's educational, collections, and outreach functions.

The KHS Foundation Board of Directors is a nonpartisan group of 30 directors, including selected directors emeriti. Each director serves a three-year term for a maximum of three full terms. Current directors represent Kentucky’s philanthropic, equine, corporate, and professional communities.

Headquartered in Frankfort at the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History in Frankfort, the KHS Foundation, was established in 1991 as a 501(c)(3) organization to raise private sector support for the Society. The foundation board of directors meets six times per year.

As an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet, the Kentucky Historical Society’s principal source of funding is through state appropriations. State funding, however, provides only rent, utilities, personnel, and basic operating budgets. The KHS Foundation further supports the Society’s programs and services through soliciting monetary, in-kind, and volunteer contributions.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

In 2005 the Foundation launched the "Campaign for Kentucky: The Thomas D. Clark Education Challenge" to raise support for endowment and immediate opportunities in the areas of education, collections acquisition and support, and outreach. To date $8.1 million dollars has been committed toward the $7 million base goal and the campaign is now working to reach its $10 million stretch goal.
