Overview
Bluegrass Greensource is looking for a highly motivated and experienced professional to join its education team. This position will help Greensource’s youth education efforts by offering high quality, experiential, standards-aligned lessons throughout schools in Central Kentucky as well as at Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary.
Background
Bluegrass Greensource was formed in 2001 to provide environmental education and resources that equip and empower Central Kentuckians to ensure clean, healthy, and enjoyable environments. We currently have a staff of 6 who are dedicated to environmental education about water quality, waste reduction and energy efficiency. We focus on facilitating preK-12, business and adult education in Central Kentucky.
Location
The position is based at Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary in Woodford County and at an office in Lexington, but teaching onsite at various schools and events requires driving throughout Central Kentucky.
Position Description
The duties and responsibilities of the Environmental Educator include but are not limited to the following:
- Facilitate Environmental Education programming
- Teach environmental lessons in classrooms and outdoor settings to students in grades PreK-12 across Bluegrass Greensource’s service region
- Serve as a liaison between Bluegrass Greensource and the schools in Greensource’s service region by maintaining communication and scheduling programming
- Assist schools in planning and implementing projects and culminating events
- Develop Environmental Education programs relating to Bluegrass Greensource’s mission
- Set up and present activities at festivals, community events, school family engagement events, etc.
- Help plan and organize outdoor field trips, summer day camps and creek days both at Buckley Wildlife Sanctuary and at outdoor venues in Central Kentucky.
- Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of all lessons, events, purchases
- Contribute to monthly, quarterly, and/or grant and contract reports
- Maintain accurate weekly time and travel records
- Perform related duties as required.
Avg. Hours per Week: 40 hours with some evening and weekend activities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, education, or related field
Two (2) years of experience in program management or teaching.
Preference given to candidates who are certified environmental educators and/or have received training in environmental education
Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Knowledge:
Knowledge of Kentucky Academic Standards
Familiarity with environmental education programs and curricula
General knowledge of environmental issues facing Central Kentucky
Abilities:
Ability to communicate and coordinate with PreK-12 teachers and school administrators
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
Ability to meet deadlines
Ability to manage multiple projects and programs
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and all program participants
Ability to travel throughout the service area
Physical Demands of the Job: Work is performed in Greensource’s office and onsite at schools/field trip locations, both indoor and out; intermittent standing, walking, stooping is required; must be able to lift objects weighing less than 25 pounds as a job requirement; must operate vehicle.
Knowledge of: Environmental issues; teaching and public education practices; environmental conservation methods.
Skill in: Providing effective and factual lessons and presentations; communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; organizing events and activities; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
